Good Afternoon Fitchburg High School Families:
We hope everyone is having a nice start to the summer.
Thank you for a great school year. We were able to see growth in many areas this school year, including an increase in daily attendance, decrease in conduct referrals, and an increase in many areas of academic performance. Family support of Fitchburg High School is a big reason why we were able to accomplish these goals. Thank you for your continued support!
Starting the week of July 1, 2024, Fitchburg High School will operate on a summer schedule. The main office will be open Monday to Thursday from 7:00am to 3:00pm. The school will be closed on Fridays. The school will be closed on July 4, 2024.
If you have any questions about high school summer school, please email Guidance Counselor, Mr. Lowney (lowneys@fitchburg.k12.ma.us).
Report Cards for the fourth academic quarter will be mailed to homes this week. Please email our SIMS Secretary, Ms. Loepere-Smith (loepereg@fitchburg.k12.ma.us), if you do not receive your student's Report Card by Monday July 1, 2024. Additionally, fourth quarter academic grades will be available on ASPEN this week.
If you need to complete a school transfer or withdrawal over the summer, please email our school Registrar, Ms. Solano Padilla (solanopadillam@fitchburg.k12.ma.us).
If you have any questions about summer programs for middle school or elementary school students, please email Mr. Marderosian (marderosianj@fitchburg.k12.ma.us).
Lastly, I (Dr. Braga) will be away from the school from July 1, 2024 to July 19, 2024. I will be checking emails once a day during this time. If you need school administration support during this time, please email Mr. Sochovka (Assistant Principal) (sochovkad@fitchburg.k12.ma.us). Mr. Sochovka will be able to help with any questions or requests needing administration support.
In closing, we will not send weekly emails during the summer. We will send emails and messages periodically during the summer to keep families updated on the upcoming School Year, 2024-2025.
Have a wonderful summer and thank you!
Dr. Braga

The Regional Youth and Community Survey:
Parents and Guardians of Grade 10 students
The Regional Youth and Community Survey (YCS), modeled after the Center for Disease Control’s (CDC) Youth Risk Behavior Survey, was developed to monitor priority health behaviors that contribute to the leading causes of death, disease, injury, and social problems among youth. This voluntary survey will be administered to students in Grade 10 at Fitchburg High School during the week of May 27th.
The survey is anonymous, and no individual respondent will be identified. The survey includes questions about physical activity and health, mental health, as well as nicotine, alcohol and drug use (please see links to the survey questions below).
The aggregate data that will be generated from the survey will allow for the district to monitor changes over time, identify emerging issues, as well as to plan and evaluate programs to support the health of youth. Healthy students are better learners and are more likely to become healthy adults.

Mental Health Awareness Month Weekly Message:
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. The key word for today’s message is HEALTH. A mentally healthy person is someone who is able to manage both positive and negative emotions in ways that result in a favorable outcome and that does not harm or hurt anyone. They get upset, angry, sad, stressed, and worried at times but they handle these feelings in healthy, constructive ways. Maybe they take a deep breath, calm down, then talk with the other person. Maybe they make a plan to change what they can and accept what they can’t change. Maybe they ask for help from a counselor or their parent. There are many options. The key is to make choices that are healthy and that don’t put yourself or someone else at risk.

Good morning everyone,
As we continue to plan for graduation, we have been advised to adjust the amount of tickets we distribute to ensure that there is adequate space and that we maintain a safe environment. As such, seniors will be receiving 8 tickets each. If this presents a hardship, please reach out to us and we will determine if we can adjust the number of tickets up to 10 tickets on a case by case basis.

May is Mental Health Month (weekly message):
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Studies show that one way to help yourself feel better emotionally is to help someone else! Who knew?! It reduces stress, improves your mood, and has a positive effect on your self-esteem. Helping someone else doesn’t have to cost money or take much time. You don’t even have to know the person. Mental Health Awareness Announcement:
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Did you know that our mental health is influenced by our physical health, and our physical health is influenced by our mental health? It’s important to take care of both. Physical activities that help our mental health include getting enough sleep at night, exercising regularly, and eating a balanced diet. While these sound like things that help us be physically well, research shows repeatedly that these behaviors also have a direct, powerful and positive effect on our mental health. So, how much sleep do you need? Again, studies show teens need 8-10 hours of sleep each night. Want to feel better emotionally? Consider practicing these three things: getting enough sleep, exercising, and eating healthy food.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. A green ribbon is the symbol worn to increase awareness of taking care of your mental health. Each year, one out of every six people between the ages of 6 and 17 experience a mental health disorder.
Maybe you or someone you know is one of these people. If so, remember you are not alone and that there are many ways to get help, starting with letting an adult you trust know that you want help. Our school’s counselor(s), your parent or guardian, a teacher, or any adult you trust is a good place to start. Don’t wait. Who is your person? Talk with them today. Don’t have an adult you trust? Take a chance and talk with your school counselor or one of your teachers today.
No esperes. ¿Quién es tu persona? Habla con ellos hoy. ¿No tienes un adulto en quien confíes? Aprovecha la oportunidad y habla con tu consejero escolar o uno de tus maestros hoy.
School Committee Meetings are concurrently live streamed on FATV at https://www.fatv.org/live-streaming

Aury Rivera had tears in her eyes as she took in the happy, bustling scene at the Princess Boutique on Friday afternoon.
This is the second year the educator has helmed the Fitchburg High School Latin American Club sponsored affair, which offered up 541 gorgeous prom dresses in a multitude of colors and styles along with jewelry, purses, shoes, and makeup for the students – all donated, all free.
“I’m gonna cry,” a beaming Rivera said. “It’s amazing to see that we can make a difference in these students’ lives. Every little bit helps.”
Throngs of excited young ladies were putting makeup on each other and trying on dresses to see which one they were going to take home to wear to prom on May 11. The juniors and seniors were invited to sign up for raffle prizes including gift certificates for hair and makeup packages and jewelry and there was a list of local vendors who can do alterations if needed.
“Every year is better than the last,” GEAR UP program counselor Alex Mahan said while watching the flurry of activity with a big smile on her face. “Some of our kids are juniors and seniors, some of these kids I’ve known since 7th grade. If I think too much about it I’ll cry.”
Rivera and many others have been working hard to put together the event that grew so much since last year that they took over a second classroom across the hall from hers that was also filled to the brim with dresses and everything else. A number of FHS teachers, staff, and community members also helped to ensure its success.
“Students from the Latin American Club spent some quality time with me after school for a week sorting dresses, putting them on hangers, and taking care of every detail including making a backdrop for pictures,” Rivera said of a group of young ladies she affectionately calls “my girls.” “I couldn’t have done it without the help of my team.”
Everything down to the reusable shopping bags was donated, including 200 dresses from Pam Porter, the owner and editor of The Lunenburg Ledger newspaper who called up Rivera several weeks ago to offer the bounty.
One of Rivera’s former students, Amanda Barnett, the owner of Mnandi Salon & Spa in Leominster donated dresses and gift certificates, Eye Candy Beauty Bar out of Orange donated facials and makeup application, and Men’s Warehouse in Leominster provided two tuxedo rentals.
Thumb’s Up Barber Shop, Rivera’s husband’s Fitchburg business, donated gift certificates and cash and her son’s Thumb’s Up Kicks venture donated “pretty bags for the students to carry their dresses and belongings” along with FHS special ed teacher Ellen McGuane and Great Clips cosmetologist Sachira Correa, Rivera shared.
FHS paraprofessional Lori Gormley sat by a table covered with 150 pieces of sparkly Paparazzi jewelry that her mother in law’s neighbor Shannon O’Neill of Irresistible Shimmer with Shannon donated along with her daughter in memory of her late daughter.
Fitchburg Public Schools Family and Community Engagement Coordinator Luisa Fernandez was able to provide makeup with North Central Massachusetts Chamber of Commerce funding through her connections with the nonprofit organization. She also brought a big box of black Bombas socks donated by the company and sneakers in various colors, styles, and sizes, including Converse and Fila.
One young man came by the table Fernandez and Fitchburg Public Schools superintendent Executive Assistant Mary Alexandra Molina were manning and snagged a pair of shoes.
“We have so many we thought we would bring some,” Fernandez said of the donated footwear the school district receives from Nashville headquartered nonprofit Soles4Souls.
Rivera is passionate about her students and has deep ties to the area. She immigrated to the U.S. from Puerto Rico in 1996 and graduated from FHS two years later.
She stayed in the city 22 years before moving to Winchendon several years ago with her husband and their two children and wears many hats at FHS, where she has worked in various positions since 2003. She is currently the World Language Spanish Teacher, World Language Department Facilitator, 2025 Class Advisor, and Latin American Club Advisor.
Rivera started collecting prom dresses in a small closet in her classroom closet four years ago after realizing that some of the students couldn’t afford them and opened the first Princess Boutique last April.
“I hope they all go,” she said of the hundreds of dressing hanging up.
McGuane praised Rivera and her efforts after watching the beautiful chaos unfold.
“I admire her so much. She goes above and beyond.”
Rivera shared several photos from the day on social media afterwards. In the post, she thanked everyone involved in helping to make it such a huge success and included a quote that couldn’t have been more perfect.
“The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.”

Reminder, Student Drop-Off (Arrival):
Students cannot be dropped off on the road for safety reasons. Students must exit vehicles in the parking lot. Thank you for your attention to this safety routine.
Reminder (Being Tardy to School):
It is important for all students to be on time to school. Being on time to school allows students to take full advantage of their education. Additionally, being on time helps students access content and pass their courses. Fitchburg High School sends text messages home for students who are late to school. With your support, we can decrease tardiness and increase time on learning.
